The Power of Coloring

The Power of Coloring

Researchers say that coloring can be used to aid with therapy and as an intervention to relieve stress and anxiety. Coloring allows us to switch our brains off from other thoughts and focus and concentrate only on the moment which can help with problem solving and organizational skills. When we are thinking about balance, which color to choose, applying crayon or colored pencil to paper, we are working on problem solving and fine motor skills. Who knew all of this was involved from the simple act of having fun bringing a picture to life, right?

Did you also know that adult coloring stems all the way back to the late great psychologist Carl Jung? Jung used coloring thinking it would help his client’s access new self-knowledge. Even now, many psychologists suggest this to patients as a means of relaxation, and as a calming tool. This applies to individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, stress disorders, depressive disorders, eating and binge eating disorders, anger management issues, and substance abuse issues. The time and focus that adult coloring takes helps the individual remove the focus from the negative issues and habits, and focus them in a safe and productive way. With the craziness of life’s ups and downs I’m sure we could all use a little coloring to relax our minds and unwind. So, whether you are helping clients, coloring alone or coloring with a group of girlfriends at a coloring party just have fun, unplug from technology and create magic!
